One of the most ground-breaking tours of all time, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds is making its sixth and final tour of UK Arenas.
Conducted by Jeff Wayne, the most ambitious production yet will feature Liam Neeson in 3D holography, Jason Donovan as Parson Nathaniel, Westlife’s Brian McFadden as The Sung Thoughts of The Journalist, X Factor 2005 winner Shayne Ward as the Artilleryman, Les Miserables’ Carrie Hope Fletcher as Beth, Parson Nathaniel’s Wife, X Factor 2013’s, Joseph Whelan, as The Voice of Humanity, the 36-piece ULLAdubULLA Strings and the 9-piece Black Smoke Band.
The show, which is mixed live in Surround Sound, features remarkable special effects, including the incredible 3-tonne 35-foot tall Martian Fighting Machine firing real flames into the Arena, a 100 foot wide “animation wall” with 2 hours of cutting edge CGI, the incineration of a cast member in front of the audience’s eyes, a ground-breaking levitation effect and much more!
This is the last chance to experience the award-winning Arena production!
Jeff Wayne said,
Bringing The War of The Worlds to life in many of the world's finest arenas has been the most amazing experience, both musically and technologically. However, the time is right to take The War of The Worlds in new directions after the 2014 tour. All I can say for the future of TWOTW is – Watch this space!
Adding a new dimension and marking a spectacular finale, HG Wells, the author of The War of The Worlds, will be brought to life being seen and heard in three riveting scenes within the show – aged 33, 53 and 79 – spanning the end of the 19th century and two subsequent World Wars.
HG Wells will be played by Scottish actor Callum O’Neill, who is best known for his role as 'Wee Dingwall' in Disney Pixar's 2012 Summer Blockbuster Brave. In 2013, Callum also played Angus in Jamie Lloyd's Olivier nominated Macbeth, at Trafalgar Studios in London's West End.
To transform Callum into HG Wells, Jeff Wayne and his team have engaged the services of Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Mark Coulier, creative director of one of Europe's leading make-up effects companies, Coulier Creatures FX. Mark’s work has included transforming Meryl Streep into Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady' and creating ‘Lord Voldemort’ on the Harry Potter movies.
Jeff Wayne commented,
Over the years TWOTW has built a reputation by challenging our creative team to add new ingredients to every production that would move and excite our audiences further.
For our final UK arena tour, I decided that it was time to give TWOTW creator – HG Wells a chance to ‘have his say’, about why he wrote what has become known as the first science fiction story ever written, and its meaning to the real world we live in.As a result, I’m most excited to announce that HG Wells will be seen and heard in 3 riveting scenes within our show – aged 33, 53 and 79 – spanning the end of the 19th century and two subsequent World Wars.
While HG may have also authored The Time Machine – it’s TWOTW and modern technology that is bringing him back

I’m so excited to be taking on the role of the Artilleryman for the amazing tour of Jeff Wayne's classic, The War of The Worlds. So many huge artists have been involved in the show and I am really honoured to be part of this last ever UK arena tour! As I enter a new phase of my career it’s so exciting to be taking on such a huge challenge! The War of the Worlds is truly epic, both musically and in terms of production. The show is mind-blowing on so many levels and I look forward to working with Jeff and the rest of the cast.
I’ve long been a fan of The War of The Worlds and am so excited to be involved in the tour. It’s a true honour to be involved in this electrifying show and to be joining such an exciting cast, including singing the thoughts of The Journalist, who is played by one of my all-time Irish heroes, Liam Neeson. It’s also a thrill to be performing the two international Hit Singles “The Eve of The War” and “Forever Autumn”. This will be a totally new experience for me which is both terrifying and exhilarating.!
The War of The Worlds is a classic. This production is on a scale like nothing I have ever done before – the effects are breath-taking both in front and behind the stage! It’s also one of the most enjoyable, most exciting and most memorable musical productions of all time. It’s a true honour to be returning for the third time, especially as this is the final Arena tour.
I’m delighted to have been cast as Beth, Parson Nathaniel’s wife: I genuinely can’t wait to get started. My family and I grew up listening to the album and now I’m going to be a part of it. My character levitates and disappears into thin air in full view of the audience, so that’s rather exciting too!
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that X Factor would bring me to the attention of the legendary Jeff Wayne! To be cast in Jeff’s classic, The War of The Worlds is totally amazing! And it is particularly special to be part of the final ever arena tour! As a huge fan of The War of the Worlds this is a dream come true for me. Jeff Wayne is an absolute rock legend and it is a true honour to be working alongside him! The production is technologically mind-blowing and this is a completely new experience for me. I’m so excited to be involved. I can’t wait to get on the road!
The new live production will once again include:
- Liam Neeson's performance in 3D holography sees him as an 11-foot high 'head and shoulders' as The Journalist recounting in 1904 his story of survival from the Martian invasion of Victorian England of six years earlier. However Liam's performance will be seen with new technological advancements.
- Liam Neeson will also seen in full body on stage interacting with the show's live performers. A triumph of technology and a remarkable performance by Liam.
- A 100-foot wide 'Animation Wall'.
- The iconic 3-tonne, 35-foot tall Martian Fighting Machine firing real flame Heat Rays at the audience and scanning them with its bug-like eyes, as it 'lands' on centre stage.
- Special effects and illusions including a world first 'levitation' and the Martian Fighting Machine's 'incineration' of a cast member.
- Leaf drops over the audience and surround sound that engulfs them, contributing to the all-encompassing experience that is The War of The Worlds.
