I have seen this before.

It is one of the illustrations from Omni Magazine, published August 1985

I did a web search to find you some more of these pics, and found a few here:

Hope this has helped.

Yes, well spotted, Luperis and LHN2005.

The art, by the Dean brothers was, I believe, considered for Jeff's album. I agree that it is too 'birdlike', although I DO like it.

We ended up with the iconic Trim designs instead.

BTW... the drzeus site is a fantastic resource for Fighting Machine designs over the years.

That's right, Roger and Martyn Dean put forward those pictures for possible use on the album.

I first saw these in a book my brother had called "Magnetic Storm" by Roger and Martyn. They do look a bit like pre-historic birds, and even though HG talks about the machines having little or no use of the fixed pivot, the Dean design is riddled with pivots and joints! Artistic licence I suppose.

Still, the pictures stand up as brilliant works of art in their own right, and certainly bring back some happy memories for me.

I like the way the tripods are given arms and the way the tentacles can be seen hanging out the cockpit

(PS: nice flashing avatar poyks)

As it struck, all five fighting machines exsulted, emmiting deafening howls which roared like thunder. ULLAAA!! ULLAAA!!

Thanks TP.

If you look closely just in front of the hood canopy, you can also see rows of what look like control buttons.

Yeah,  I've seen these a couple of times too.

Don't really conjure up the thoughts of Fighting Machines though.  Not exactly titans of Glittering Metal...!

Nice though in a sort of retro '70's sort of way.

Weren't these also used on a cover to a Computer game a while back?

Nice artwork!

Still, i feel jeff wayne made the right choice with the artwork he used, those really don't follow H.G.'s description of the tripods.  Still, an interesting idea.
